Emerald = Multi Roled Indigenous Integrated Landscape Design (MRIILD)
Better landscapes through knowledge, planning, pragmatism, practicality & utility of restoration efforts. Better landscapes = better people.
Degraded landscapes worldwide have clear & pragmatic solutions
Large areas have great possibilities for direct improvement to nature, climate, energy & people
Currently, negatively impacted land described as marginal and degraded is estimated to range from 1,000 to 6,000 Mha (Gibbs and Salmon, 2015), with FAO approximations for marginal land amounting to 2,700 Mha. Other calculations indicate that 25 percent of the world’s land is either highly degraded or subject to high rates of degradation with 12 million hectares of land deteriorating globally each year; costing USD 6.3 trillion and USD 10.6 trillion annually. The rural poor are among the most affected. The Emerald Plan Foundation's task and expertise is in direct improvements to these regions' natural systems and its people's well being.
